After Harvest

Oil on board, 9 3/4" x 12 3/4"
$600, plus $10 shipping in U.S.

A larger painting today. I tried to catch the feeling of a windy early fall day. Even the buildings seemed to hunker down in anticipation of the coming storm.

Email me for purchase details.

Nathalie, Gianni and Scout

Oil on canvas, 24" x 34"
NFS

I'll be direct posting to the blog until my server problems are solved.

This is a commissioned portrait for a family in the Cape Cod area. I shipped the completed painting off, and a week or so later received this wonderful photo of the twins in front of it. Click images to enlarge.

Server woes yet again /%@&#

Something has happened to my image server (so what else is new?) My son is in the process of setting all my sites up on a new one. Meanwhile we're trying to figure out what the trouble is this time. Sorry to all--it's frustrating not to be able to go more than two or three months before another problem crops up. Thanks for your patience.

Willow Glow

Acrylic on board, 5" x 7"
$125.00 + $6.00 shipping in US.
Available for purchase starting 10/26/08, 12 noon PST

Sitting still in the woods, one gains a heightened awareness of subtle motion. Limbs stir gently in the breeze. Dry leaves flutter soundlessly to the ground. Gleaming waters course unhurried detours around dark rocks. Sunlight sets a delicate willow limb aglow for a few heartbeats, then moves on.

Autumn Waters

Acrylic on board. 5" x 7"
$125.00 + $6.00 shipping in US.
SOLD

We are having the most beautiful Indian summer; crisp, sunny mornings melting into shirtsleeve afternoons. Yesterday I drove up Catherine Creek to see the fall color.

There is such serenity in a slow moving stream reflecting an autumn sky--deep blues mingling with shimmering russets, greens and golds; sunbathed leaves of cottonwood and willow flickering in the breeze. A perfect stress reliever--something we all can use about now, right?

I'll be traveling this weekend, so will be back with a painting post on Monday. Meanwhile, a few of my favorite quotes:

Artists and writers - like ritual magicians - know that the ego, the conscious self, does not really create anything. Instead, all our training and preparation serves to allow us to get out of the way. Something moves through us. Something wants to be created. This is what it means to experience magic, to open yourself to the power of life.

~ Rachel Pollack

If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.

~ Edward Hopper

A painter paints pictures on canvas, but musicians paint their pictures on silence.

Red Wall, Blue Sky

Acrylic on board, 5" x 7"
$125.00 + $6.00 shipping in US.
SOLD

Rural architecture around here is usually pretty straightforward and no-nonsense, you don't see a lot of ornamentation. This complex of buildings no doubt grew organically according to need, form following function.

But the beauty in these austerely simple shapes is undeniable. I couldn't resist the wonderful geometry of afternoon shadows, and the intensity of those red walls against the blue sky.

A grand and blustery fall day, curiously not unlike early spring. Looming banks of threatening clouds rolled overhead, now and then pierced with wavering flashes of brilliant sunlight.

This is the little house I grew up in. A few years ago my mother had to leave it to go into foster care (she's 98 and doing pretty well, bless her!)

Shortly after she moved, I went through the house inside and out taking photos. I've had in the back of my mind doing a group of related paintings, but always seem to find some excuse not to start. Sometimes a subject can almost be TOO personal, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I'm hopeful that starting small with some studies like this one might help me kickstart the project.

Leaving the Ancestor series for awhile.

Brenda and I bought a beautiful piece of property last summer near the small town of Cove, Oregon, and hope to be able to build a home on it next year. We go over there all the time to hang out and dream. This is the view from the future front porch.

Disguise

Oil on board, 12" x 12"
NFS

Each October our regional arts council holds a fundraising masquerade ball. I was one of six artists asked to create a mask to auction off for the cause. I agreed, then thought "What was I thinking? I'm a 2-D guy--in college I couldn't even throw a piece of pottery that didn't end up being a twelve pound ashtray!"

My solution was to cop out a little, stay in my comfort zone and do a slightly modified self-portrait, holding my mask.

You can see the great masks created by the other artists at www.artseast.org.

Ancestor 9

Acrylic on paper, 6" x 6 5/8"
$125.00 + $6.00 shipping in US.
Available for purchase starting 10/03/08, 12 noon PST

Recent insightful comments left on my message board have made me think a little harder about the motivations behind this series.

Yes there is a certain strangeness about these figures, and admittedly it is a quality I'm seeking. At the core of it for me is the poignance of life itself. The old photos are reminders that we are all apparitions--a coalescing of atoms that, after a few heartbeats, will exist in this world only in memory, or in a pattern of chemicals on a scrap of photopaper.
