Shore Breeze

SOLD

I'm going to be traveling for a few days to attend a family funeral and will be unable to paint or post. I'll leave you with this larger work, painted a couple of years ago. I plan to get back to blogging early next week. Have a wonderful weekend.

Dry Leaves

Oil on board, 6" x 6"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

I picked up these cottonwood leaves from the forest floor along Catherine Creek a month or so ago. They were freshly fallen, moist and rich in fall color. I intended to paint them right away, but instead placed them on a window sill and semi-forgot them while one thing lead to another.

I noticed them today, realizing they had acquired another kind of beauty over time. Now their curling surfaces are crackle-dry and fragile, their colors faded to the most delicate and beautiful harmonies.

Leaning Willows

Watercolor on paper, 5" x 7"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

Late afternoon sun and shadow on an old stand of windbreak willows. The trees are on their last legs, with most of the limbs dying or dead. They still make graceful shapes against the November sky. Mt. Emily rises up in the background.

Steamrise, Morning

Watercolor on paper, 10 3/4" x 13 1/2"
$500 plus $10 shipping in U.S.

A larger painting for today--mist rising off the water in the early morning sun. This watercolor is painted on heavyweight plate bristol paper. The paper is hard and very smooth, which keeps the paint floating on the surface. Washes retain beautiful clarity, but are easily lifted by successive brushstrokes. It's always a dance, partly in and partly out of control, which is what I love about it. Maybe what it really teaches me is that "control" is just an illusion, in life as well as painting.

Cottonwood Glow

Watercolor on paper, 6" x 6"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

The cottonwood is my wife Brenda's favorite tree. I love it too. They grow to great heights, stately and elegant, along the river bottoms. I like to sit in a grove and watch their broad leaves shimmer in the sun, much like aspen or birch. I close my eyes and listen to the sound they make in the wind, like the chatter of a thousand voices softly saying "Shhhhh."

My apologies for the sporadic posts lately. I'm painting for a small show at Arts East, our regional arts council, and haven't been able to work on small pieces as regularly as I'd like.

Here's lovely Catherine Creek again, all decked out in fall colors.

Sometimes I lose track of things.

Here's the provenance so far for this painting: Painted in California studio... wrapped in paper as soon as it was dry and placed in folder... loaded on moving truck and hauled to Oregon... unloaded from moving truck into Oregon mini-storage... left in storage nearly a year... re-discovered ("Oh yeah, I remember this!") in storage while looking for something else... brought to Oregon studio... posted to this blog.
