It was fun painting these glass objects--I tried to find a balance between precision and painterliness.

We're flying to Maui this week for our daughter's wedding, so this will be my last post for awhile. It's hard having to leave Oregon in mid-winter for a grueling regimen of white sand beaches and swaying palms, but don't feel too bad for us--we'll grit our teeth and get through it somehow.

I'll try to write a post or two while we're there, if it can be done from the laptop. When we return I plan to do some Maui-inspired dailies. See you in a couple of weeks.

In my studio are numerous cans, jars and buckets full of brushes. I hardly ever throw one away, unless it has just become a stick. Even then, I might keep the stick...never know when you might need a good stick.

One of the somewhat larger paintings I've been working on recently. This humble little farm shed began life as a chicken coop, then was later converted by my father-in-law to a shop. On certain mornings, when the light catches it just right, it glows as if made of gold.

This Red-tailed Hawk sat on a limb for a long time and let me photograph and observe him (her?) I was able to walk up to within about 25 feet, which is pretty remarkable for these wary birds. Just when I was beginning to think he might be ill or injured, he opened his wings and drifted effortlessly away.

Here's one of the larger paintings I've been working on lately. This is Winslow, the fellow who shares my studio space. He's a pretty good roommate, except for his annoying habit of chewing the handles off paintbrushes. But hey--who's perfect? At least he doesn't play loud music all hours, or leave the cap off the toothpaste.

The studio is on the top floor of an old brick building, with high ceilings and tall windows on three sides. I love to watch the luminous sunlight crawl across the painting walls I built years ago. Winslow follows the sun through these windows too, dragging his blanket along the floor to keep laying in the warmth... I should say what's left of his blanket--he's chewed that to shreds too.

Larger-scale works and commissions have been occupying me lately, so the smaller paintings are a little less frequent. Sometimes, even if a small painting took only an hour or two, I have trouble switching gears to work on something else. Creative energy requires a measure of physical stamina but I think it is more demanding of one's psychic energy. Some days for me that mental focus seems to get blurry after completing the daily (musn't tax my little brain,) and I can't summon the will to move on to something else. I wonder sometimes if it has something to do with the nature of the daily painting process. When I work on a piece and "complete" it that day, maybe I'm subconsciously telling myself that my day is complete.

Or...maybe it's just a good excuse to be lazy!
