My studio is in an old building that has gone through various changes, renovations and replacements over time. The wonderful result of this is that every door is unique in some way--there is nothing cookie cutter about them. I study them like you would study someone's face and take note of their personality. They are individuals, with a history and character all their own.

gets better and better all the time. i love the sunlight creeping across in this one. r.
wow, don, this series is hauntingly beautiful. and that video is fabulous!!! an an installation of these paintings accompanied by that video playing on a loop would be waaay cool...
when is a door not a door?
Besides how well you paint the subject, there is the mystery present that is always an element of excellent fine art. In this series, you have both.
Well done!
It's a wonderful, captivating series Don.
I'm passing on the "Passion for Painting" award to you. Visit my blog for details.
My first visit to your blog - and I love the 'door' series! They say so much, and are well painted to boot! You GO!
Thank you, Rahina.
Thanks a lot, Martha, I sure appreciate your words.
When is a door not a door?...maybe when you walk into it in the dark and it's not open. (Sorry. :>)
Thanks so much, Lynne. I just read a wonderful comment that I believe was by the artist Bill Viola. He said "All works of art, though visible, represent invisible things." Isn't that a wonderful way of putting what we're all trying to do?
Thanks so much, Sheila.
Linda, that's very kind of you--thank you.
Kelley, thank you! I enjoy seeing your painterly work.
There it is again....the blue and brown color combination! You can't escape it, Don! LOL
Like I said in older posts about your work, I now think of Don Gray being synonymous with blue and brown.
You handle that color combination expertly!

ouch!
no, silly...
when it's aJAR!
(SORRY! :*)
Alright, now you've done it, Dean! I'm totally self-conscious about my use of brown and blue...I'm going to ban those colors from my palette!
Actually, it is interesting the personal choices regarding colors, subjects, shapes, etc. that artists gravitate to. Thanks for pointing out one of my own tendencies that I'd never been consciously aware of.
Ouch indeed, Martha!
Really enjoyed looking at the beautiful door paintings. You make the simplest subject have emotional appeal.
I appreciate your saying that, Onpainting--thanks.
very nice work. I love the rural application.
Thanks, Gary.
Don!
I hope you aren't too self-conscious now!
I think you gravitating towards and using blues and browns so well is a GOOD thing.
That's your niche IMHO. Embrace it, don't fight it!
Blues and browns are your friend. LOL
-Dean
