A Modern Horse

Oil on board, 5" x 7"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

Regular viewers will recognize this little barn, which I never seem to tire of painting. (Maybe you're all sick of it!) I see this view of it every morning when I leave the house.

Mark, who rents pasture from us, sometimes drives his ATV out to check on his cows. Many cowboys these days are increasingly leaving Ol' Paint staring through the fence rails as they climb on their four-wheeled beasts and ride off into the sunset. I suspect they feel a little guilty about it, though.

I can't tell whether they like posing or not, but the cows in our field make ready models.

On our mini-vacation over Labor Day we rented boats and cruised around on the lake awhile--great fun.

East Fork

Oil on board, 7" x 5"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

The east fork of the Wallowa River begins at a crystalline, snowmelt lake, high in the rugged mountains of the Eagle Cap Wilderness area. Icy waters tumble and pool their way down the steep-sided canyon, splashing over and around granite boulders and deadfall timber. The sound is pure music.

Unusual Onions

Oil on board, 6" x 6"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

The Open Studio tour went well, a chance to have some nice visits with friends old and new. I sold several dailies and prints as well. Katherine Jensen, an artist friend who attended my recent watercolor workshop, dropped by and gifted me with these two unusual onions. So I worked on this painting of them, in between studio visitors.

If you'll be in northeast Oregon this weekend, come on over to the studio! I will be participating in the Grande Ronde Open Studio Tour on the 19th and 20th. My hangout is on the top floor of the Union County Museum in downtown Union, Oregon, 331 S. Main Street (catty-corner from the post office.) Use the Center Street entrance on the NE corner of the building. Hours are 10-5 Saturday and Noon-5 Sunday. I'll put some signs out. Hope to see you there!

For information on the tour, call Janet Dodson at Union County Tourism: 1-800-848-9969, or email her at visitlg@eoni.com.

Rockslide

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 12"
$750 unframed, plus $12 shipping in U.S.
Email don@dailyartwest.com for purchase

Another larger painting just completed; a view from the Aneroid Lake trail on a glorious September afternoon.

We tend to equate mountains with notions of permanence. Relative to our own lifespans they seem unchanging, eternal. But of course the forces of erosion and gravity are constantly at work, wearing and breaking them down. When crossing a place like this it's best not to dwell on how all these broken boulders got here. Actually, it's probably best not to dwell at all. And try not to look up at those fissured granite walls looming over your head.

I'm excited to be included in a new online gallery created by my Chilean artist friend, Alex Perez.

Surveyor

Oil on stretched canvas, 18" x 24"
$1800 unframed, $1900 framed, free shipping in U.S.
Email don@dailyartwest.com for purchase

This valley, with it's many farm fields full of mice and other small animals, is a haven for birds of prey. On a walk the other day we counted about 30 hawks circling one freshly tilled field. In this painting I tried to depict the edge of seasons--summer drawing to a close, harvest complete, the weather growing more changeable. I was also interested in how wild nature co-exists around and within our domesticated world.

Posts will be less frequent for awhile, as I work on larger paintings like this one, and prepare for the Open Studio tour next weekend. (In other words, I gotta clean up the mess!)

Cozy Cabin

Oil on board, 5" x 7"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
Email don@dailyartwest.com for purchase

The inside of our cabin had lots of those old-time jokey things on the wall, like a framed "Loafer's License" in the living room, and a plaque in the kitchen that said "This area patrolled by an attack housewife." Kitschy, but fun.

I want to take a moment to remember all who died in the terrible attacks eight years ago today. And for those who must live daily with the loss of their loved ones, may you find solace in the happier memories of their lives.

Above the Lake

$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.

Looking down on Wallowa Lake from the East Fork trail. The first few miles of the trail are all uphill, but worth it for the views. At least that's what I kept telling myself.

Cabin Chair

Oil on board, 7" x 5"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

I have an excuse for not posting for awhile. We escaped for a long weekend with family members at a cabin in the pines near beautiful Wallowa Lake. The cabin had lots of rustic and charming touches, including furnishings like this chair and table on the deck that were echoes of bygone times.

Our time was spent soaking up the mountain scenery; relaxing in lawn chairs or hammock; toasting marshmallows by an open fire; throwing darts and playing board games. We capped it off with a day hike into the rugged Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Oh yeah, we went boating on the lake, too:

Approaching Storm

Oil on board, 5" x 7"

Email don@dailyartwest.com for purchase

The view from our backyard as the skies darken and the wind kicks up. This old apple tree lost a big limb last winter, so now it looks like it's leaning away from the approaching storm. The cow doesn't seem very worried, though.

On the Move

Oil on board, 6" x 6"
$125 plus $6 shipping in U.S.
SOLD

As if a bell had rung, these grazing sheep suddenly started walking toward the farmyard. They followed one another like...sheep! I figure farmer Brown must have had a treat for them.

Long Shadows

Oil on board, 5" x 7"

Willows trace the path of Little Creek as it flows across the pastures. Days are growing shorter as the seasonal shift begins; every afternoon the long shadows come a little earlier.
