My mural work is included in a beautiful new hardcover book titled Mural Art, vol. 2. Subtitled "Murals on Huge Public Surfaces Around the World,'' the volume is authored by Greek muralist and publisher Kiriakos Iosofidis.

I recently received a complimentary copy (thanks, Kiriakos!) The book is a visual treat, displaying a wide variety of approaches and styles from a diverse group of international artists. It's available at Amazon, among other places.

Congratulations Don! I see so many of your small paintings, I didn't realize you paint so BIG! Its a beautiful mural. Maybe you'd like to elaborate about it, location, how long it took to paint...? I know I'd like to read about it.

Very cool!

Happy Easter!

HI Don,

Of course I am lucky enough to have seen the real thing a time or two. I think the one behind the truck, with the arches is in Lompoc isn't it?

Hi Susan--thanks a lot! I should have put a link in the post to my mural site--I'll do that next post. You can see my mural work at www.dongraymurals.com. Click the "About" link in the header to read a little about the mural process.

I have a two-page spread in the book, with a representative group of five murals.

Hi Katherine--thanks. Sure, come on by.

Thanks, Sam, although...ummm...the Oregon Trail mural is not pictured in the book.

Hello Jason--thanks a lot!

Hi Ann-Marie, good to hear from you. Actually that mural is in Santa Paula.

Whoops. Well, at least you sound like it exists. But where did I see it?...

Congratulations! I will have to search out the book. As a billboard painter in a former life, I do occasionally miss painting that large (and I liked rappelling down the side of a four story building at the end of the day). On the other hand, I don't miss fighting the wind, rain, snow, and invariably repetitive questions from passerby. And although I got to do a few more 'artful' walls, never anything as cool as yours. Wow! Very impressive.

Congratulations, Don, that's great!

HMMM...have you ever been to Vale, Oregon, Sam? Vale is directly on the Oregon Trail, and I have painted two trail-related murals there. Or maybe you saw them on my murals website: www.dongraymurals.com.

Thanks, R, for the visit and great comments. I did a little billboard work myself many years ago. Never had the "pleasure" of rapelling down four stories, though--wow! I did once have to climb straight up a 70-foot single pole billboard, then pull a hook ladder up on a rope. I hooked the ladder over the top of the board, with the bottom of the ladder hanging off in space. It took me about an hour to work up the nerve to step on the ladder!

Thanks, Carolina--good to hear from you.

Thanks a lot, Rahina. Yeah, I've been thinking about making a daily paintings book--thanks for the encouragement.

Beautiful! When my family flew from Pittsburgh, PA to see our son in Twenty Nine Palms, he made sure we stopped to see your "Iraqi Freedom" mural before we left town. Dan was so impressed by it that we've been searching ever since for a poster or photo of the mural. Is this mural in the book, I would love to surprise him? Thanks

Don Gray said...

Thanks, Terry. No, the mural is not in the book. Email me at don@dailyartwest.com and I'll send you contact info for tracking down a print.
