When we lived in the southwest, xeriscape gardens were common around many homes. In fact, we removed the lawn of our Flagstaff home and replaced it with a garden of rocks, gravel and drought-tolerant plants. It was quite beautiful.

Even in Portland, where moisture is plentiful, these low-water gardens are increasingly popular. We came across this one while walking the dogs last weekend.
