Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is one of the most famous monuments on all the Oregon Shore. It has been photographed and painted countless times. Here's one more.

As an artist, part of me wants to shrink from painting a subject so well-known it has become something of a cliche'. On the other hand I'm drawn to the dramatic beauty and "picturesque" quality of the place, just like everyone else. If artists avoided every subject or idea that's been tried before, there wouldn't be much art around. So what the heck--here's my version of Haystack Rock.

You may have painted a familiar subject, but I loved the array of textures in your treatment. The slick, wet sand, the rough rock, the brushstrokes showing amid the clouds and the waves were all masterful. I especially liked the mist above the water and around the rock--so faint, yet so evident. Amazing to me.
