This painting dates from 2006, when we were living in California. One day my son and I were making the rounds of art galleries in Santa Monica. As Jared walked through the glass doors of a gallery showing minimalist abstract paintings, the late afternoon sun cast his shadow across the wall. It was just too perfect: the starkly colorful paintings on the white walls making the space look like a three dimensional Mondrian abstraction; Jared's real shadow which, in it's own way, was very abstract. I knew immediately this had to be a painting.

I made Jared walk in and out of the door probably five or six times as I snapped photos. Finally the gallery owner appeared out of the back room, looking puzzled and a little distracted. No doubt we set off a bell back there every time we opened the door. When he saw what we were doing, he just smiled and shrugged. "More crazy artists," he probably thought.
