I often spot blue herons on walks along Salmon Creek. Although pretty common in the northwest, herons always strike me as very exotic--like a bird you would find deep in some tropical jungle. They tolerate humans only to a point. If you linger or stare too hard, they grow visibly nervous and will usually fly away with silent, slow-motion sweeps of their long wings.
