The mural is on the Convention Center wall, much to my relief! Click these photos to enlarge.
The first (and most difficult) step was to attach a grid structure of 1 x 4 strips to the concrete wall. It involved drilling a lot of holes into hard cement. The structure had to be very square and precise, so the panels would fit accurately. Here we are putting the first panel in place:

Jim would balance the panels on the railing of the Genie Lift and carefully raise them up. We padded the railing with towels to protect the edges of the panels:

When the panels were in place I attached them with screws to the supporting framework:

The mural was "framed" with painted 1 x 2 strips, and the screw heads touched up with paint, to complete the job. I couldn't have done it without Dan (left) and Jim, faithful employees of the Center. Thanks, fellows!

That is simply grand.
How did you do that?
Are the panels made of canvas?
That is really something to look at.
Is it on permanant display?
Wow. It's amazing Don. You could really be standing there too, looking down on that incredible view. Fair play to you!
it looks magnificent: it's been great to follow the process from beginning to the end, including bongart's antics to help the process along:))r.
Simply beautiful.
Very, very impressive Don. What an honor! You should be so proud of yourself. The painting is so magnificent.
This is an unbelieveable project of MAGNITUDE! You are really incredible and it is so beautiful.
Well done.
Don,
Thanks for sharing the progress of this project. The logistics of such a project must present so many challenges. Congratulations on a fine mural and finding solutions to the many challenges.
Beautiful Don! And I am sooooo glad I wasn't helping on this end yikes! No really I would have helped but it looks treacherous. Congratulations on the completion. It looks great. I can't wait to see it in person.
Congratulations - an awesome project! You deserve a big round of applause from the thousands and thousands of people who will see your beautiful work and enjoy it!
Thank you, Gregory. Yes, the mural is permanently installed. The panels are MDF board. Visit earlier posts on my blog, beginning with July 15th, to see the mural progress and descriptions of process from start to finish.
Thanks, April, and welcome!
Hi Rahina, thanks for the comments. Yes, Winslow (alias Bongart) does liven up the studio. :>}
Thanks a lot, Nancy.
Hi Takeyce--good to hear from you and thanks for those supportive comments!
Lynne, you are a generous spirit--thanks!
Bill, thank YOU for following the progress. Hope it's going well for you in Chicago. You continue to create amazing paintings.
Thanks, Sunrise Sister--much appreciated!
Hi Katherine--thanks a lot. Yes, a bit treacherous. One learns as a mural painter not to step back to admire the work--especially if you're still on the scaffold! :)
Thanks for helping me get these panels off the studio wall.
Awesome, Don.
Well done.
Good job! It is just beautiful. You have to feel so good to see it up there and look grand!
Thanks, Jason--glad to hear from you.
Hi Dawn--thanks so much. I enjoy your blog.
Wow that is simply impressive Don! You've take great pride and care of this commission from beginning to end which from what I've seen is pretty much what you deliver with every piece you do! I wouldn't think twice ever recommending you for any art job big or small - you truly inspire the best in me thank you! And congrats again!
Nice work my friend. Next time we're through Pendelton we'll have to stop and see it.
When's the next gathering of artists at your studio?
Bri-
unbelievable. fantastic.
It looks beautiful Don! What I love is that you've managed to keep it painterly at that scale. Congratulations!
Erika, you're so supportive and inspiring yourself--thanks so much!
Thanks, Bri.
I'm thinking to re-start the gatherings after the dust settles from everyone's busy summer comings and goings. Probably October.
Thank you, Naquaiya.
Deborah, thanks for that great compliment. I do try to keep them painterly, so glad you felt that.
Looks fantastic Don. I love the strip framing too, just sets it off.
Completely great.. The scale of the intimate moment in nature was captured beautifully. Not so easy to do DON ..wow you must really be loving the seemingly immediacy of 6 x 6 now.
