Speaking of dogs, this is our dog Pablo (after Picasso,)curled up in his favorite sleeping spot. He's a little Beagle cross we got at the pound in Flagstaff. Pablo's an old guy now, about 14 or 15. He still loves his daily walks, though. I can't recall a time in my life when I didn't have a dog.

SOLD

This is the same old ranch dog depicted in "Memory 5," my post of June 8th. My posts are going to be less frequent for awhile. I'm preparing work this week for a show in Burbank and then leave in a few days for Oregon. My wife's already up there--she even took the dog! Lonely down here. I told Brenda I didn't miss her but I missed the dog. She might not let me in the door when I get there. I might be in the doghouse.

My longtime friend Marshall sitting in front of his tent, way back in the 70's. I used to visit him at his high mountain property in Oregon, where he was building a log cabin all by himself. He posed for several paintings back when I was beginning my art career. Once I had him stand on the railroad tracks while I did a drawing...practically got him ran over when I got engrossed in the drawing and didn't notice the train coming. Looking back I realize Marshall's been very patient with me.

Patches, one of our dogs from long ago. He showed up one day as a stray, which is what happens when you live in the country. We kept him, of course. He was a big, goofy, gentle guy.

Mussel shells are so plentiful that they tend to be underrated. But if one takes the time to look, their streamlined shapes and dark, iridescent surfaces are incredibly beautiful.

Jared and I have returned back to the future, having spent all last month in the year 1858 while painting the Lincoln/Douglas debate mural in Ottawa, Illinois. (See my June 12th and 24th posts.) All these photos are courtesy of Peggy, Ottawa Visitor’s Center. Click photos to enlarge.
The mural is finished!
And we are glad!
They covered up this mural with huge tarps (quite a job in itself) and then unveiled it on dedication day. A nice crowd showed up. Even old Abe was there and got in on the act.
President Lincoln gamely tried out a new-fangled microphone.
Getting a closer look.
We shake hands with the fine folks of Ottawa. It was a challenging project but the support and encouragement of the community made it a lot of fun.

On family camping trips when I was a kid we often pitched our tent along this icy snow-fed stream. I may have slowed down a bit...OK...maybe quite a bit... since my youthful hiking days, but I still love an opportunity to head "up South Fork."

I had the good fortune to grow up within a large and loving extended family. Our annual reunion is coming up in a few days and it got me to thinking about this old church on Cricket Flat, near where the gathering will be. In 1899, when my grandfather was 17, he helped his brother and father build this chapel in the pines.
